Unguarded gems: What could be Philly's next Jewelers Row?

Posted on Saturday, Apr 01, 2017
If Jewelers Row, one of the city’s most popular streets and the country’s oldest diamond district, can face a wrecking ball, how safe are any of the historic buildings and blocks that make Philadelphia unique? Skyscrapers could rise on most of Center City’s commercial streets, and many beloved neighborhoods are over-zoned and under-protected. Unless leaders, starting with Mayor Kenney and the Historical and Planning Commissions, start identifying and preserving the historical, cultural, and architectural gems that make this the country’s only World Heritage City, Philadelphia’s charm, identity, and legacy will be threatened.
