Letters: The case for blackteachers

RE THE LETTER "Look-alike Teachers" (Oct. 30) from Christopher Vicente:

I hope you continue read about and try to understand the concepts held by articles that promote the need for black teachers in the Philadelphia School District.

There is a need for black teachers where the minority is the majority. This is not to say that there will be a 180-degree turn around in student achievement or behavior.

But this could bring an opportunity for those black (or minority teachers) to begin to relate to these minority students. Any person outside someone's race or religion cannot fully relate because of the difference in the religious and cultural factors.

There has to be a common ground between teacher and student to have a relationship.

Honestly, it's not about the teacher who looks like me, it's about the teacher that "can relate to me" because he or she knows what's going on in that student's world.

This is not to say that your race or religion is the "be-all" to education, but it's a start to making sure classes are culturally relevant, and there isn't a breakdown when a white teacher steps into a room of minority students. It's not a race issue, it's reality!

Pet peeve

Does Mayor Nutter ever think before he makes such ridiculous statements like "I don't know of any policy which says you can't bring dogs to work"? Are you for real, Mike?

How about if anybody who works for the city who has a dog should bring it to work?

If you're a supervisor, then you can make one of your people walk your dog, clean up the dog poop, and, if need be, put drops in their eyes like the managing director apparently does.

Does anybody else think this is dumb, or is it just me? Fire her, Mike.

"I hope you continue read about and try to understand the concepts held by articles that promote the need for black teachers in the Philadelphia School District." I guess only black students suffer in the city? Hispanics? Russians? Asians? You reasoning is SUSPECT at best. Actually, it is completely wrong. I was taught by Aisan women at one point. I guess I needed to be taught by short white Jewish guys if I really wanted to learn? And I hope you learn to how use correct grammar.

Yeah, Jae, just like my success as a product of the Catholic schools system was because the nuns could relate to me.......LOL.

So where are all the Black teachers and why are they not applying for jobs? Could be there are so few it wouldn't matter. A teacher is a teacher, no matter what color and no one should have to "relate" to one.

No one ever worried about the teachers relating to us. WE had to relate to the teachers. Math, Reading, Writing, how are these race related. So I Guess I should not have had any teachers who were black, protestant, jewish, hindu, muslim etc? I would think that these highly at risk children need to experience teachers of all backgrounds, otherwise, all it does is further ghettoize them, and not prepare for the world outside their neighborhood.

Perhaps it is all about the students relating to being taught? Why is it good for other races to be taught by any color teacher, but when it comes to blacks they should be taught by only black teachers? If a student is not encouraged to learn and supported by their parents, then what good is the teacher going to do?

The premise behind this letter is flawed at best and racist at worst. The idea, it seems, is that only teachers with the same skin pigment and life experiences as their students can properly empathize with them. That is totally bogus. Teachers are not there to socialize, become friends or otherwise relate to students on a personal basis....although it happens once in a while. They are there to teach. Let's be frank, shall we. What is missing in so many of the lives of black children, particularly boys, are good male role models. In other words, these kids might be more motivated if they had a black male in front of the classroom being a father substitute. No teacher should be burdened with that obligation although coaches often assume that role. I agree that children need to hear voices from all kinds of cultures so they can negotiate the wider world outside their ghetto.

If you are in a class being taught any hard science material, you will know that worrying about culturally relating to the teacher is not of any importance to doing well in the class. If that's what you're worried about, you are probably just looking for excuses for your poor performance.

Imagine
In my entire public schooling I had three black teachers. They did not relate to me any more then the white teachers. I can understand why one would want to encourage more minorties to become teachers, but they will teacher the same way white teachers will teach. It all starts at home.

Magistra - hate to admit it but i think your comment is the closest to the truth. If they had the love and support they needed at home? Their wouldn't be issues about who or what color the teacher is at school because the student all ready has a solid foundation. Being a BAF who was fortunate enough to live in a upper middle class world, I was surrounded by white students and white teachers in which I did not feel uncomfortable at all due to the fact I had a strong home base. And there were "incidents" of racism with students from time to time....but in actuality I had more problems with black kids on a lower economical than my family. I was an "Uncle Tom" or and oreo cookie. LOL Some black people are like crabs..........when one rises to the top? The rest try to grab you and pull you back down.

Didn't the blacks want to go to white schools for a better Ed. That is what was the begining of busing. They said the white schools had better (white) teachers. I sure hope they get their wish for black teachers, so then they all will stop this crying and go back to O.B. class! yack-yack!

Can you imagine the reaction if a suburban school district said that it needed more white teachers to relate to its students? The NAACP would bring suit in a heartbeat.

if arlene really thinks by hiring more black teacher for the black children so they can learn, where is her concern for the white, asians, and spanish children that are now going to be taught by these black teachers? don't they need to have a teacher of the same nationality as they are? why not segregate the schools now and put all the white students in with white teachers and all the black students in with black teachers and lets see who learns. why be concerned that this country has tried to desegregate schools over the past 40 years while arlene is only concerned about her bank account.

Maybe this will be the last of the "pigmentation" excuses to be used until the real problem is recognized. To wit: the destruction of the Black Family unit beginning in the early 1960's.
