Not impressive numbers, but hardly "all-white," either. Perhaps the years have dimmed Miss Crocker's memory.

Abusing the press
At a time when a free press is absolutely necessary to distinguish fact from lies, manipulation, distortion and innuendo, the Republicans are doing all they can to discourage and degrade in-depth coverage by scapegoating and demeaning the press, branding reporters as liberal, self-serving elitists.
This intimidation and the reluctance to discuss issues, coupled with the consistent use of the word "evil" to divide and terrify, brings to mind the warning: "He who sees the devil has a cloven hoof."
SaraKay Smullens, Philadelphia
I believe a candidate shouldn't use a campaign member to attack his opposition. Obama has used them to attack McCain and his service.
If Obama wants to do the honorable thing, he can call of his campaign manager. If elected officials want to take a position, that's their prerogative - Obama can't control their message. Campaign managers work for the candidate. If they blunder, they can be fired or forgiven. They're a reflection of the candidate and his honor.

As a black woman, it gives me great joy to know that Mr. Obama is in a position to hold the highest office in this country, and with Mr. Biden as his vice president, our country will prosper.
I'm only just getting to know who Mrs. Palin is and she very well may be capable of doing the job.
But Mr. McCain is the Republican choice for president, and I do find that a scary thought. Hopefully this nation will respond by voting for the candidate who will move this country forward regardless of race or sex.

A real role model
Re Darius Wright's Sept. 10 letter:
It would be an easy reply for me to say that if you don't like America, just leave - heck, after reading your letter, I'm sure I can get a collection up to buy you a one-way ticket to wherever you'd like to go.
But what I'd really like to tell you is to look on Page 8 of the Wednesday paper your letter was published in.
Joe Davis should be your inspiration. A recovering addict and drug dealer with a bullet in his back that left him a paraplegic should be an inspiration to everyone who thinks something is "owed" to them by this country we live in.
Gary Miller, Wenonah, N.J.
