ISSUE | CAMPAIGN 2016

GOP must dump Trump now

As a Republican, I urge Pennsylvania's Republican leaders to openly renounce Donald Trump's candidacy to become the party's nominee for president.

Trump isn't a broad-thinking leader and lacks a historical understanding of America. He speaks crudely of others, brags incessantly about himself, shows disdain for facts, fails to articulate coherent positions, and has an unsavory business background.

Trump is a demagogue who debases civic dialogue. Pennsylvania Republicans must try to stop him in the name of patriotism.

If state Republican Party Chairman Rob Gleason, national committeeman Bob Asher, Sen. Pat Toomey, and U.S. Rep. Pat Meehan, among others, fail to renounce Trump as the nominee, I believe they will permanently harm our country.

Neither party mechanics nor convention rules prevent party leaders from voicing their consciences. Anything less would be unpatriotic. Trump brings shame to the party of Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and both George Bushes.

McGinty was a poor choice

I watched in horror as Katie McGinty was interviewed on MSNBC concerning Pat Toomey and his stance on gun control. While I will still vote for her since I would like to see a Democratic majority in the Senate, I am angry with the party establishment for supporting her nomination. She is an extremely weak candidate and came across that way on the friendly airwaves of MSNBC. While I was not a big fan of Joe Sestak, at least he was coherent when interviewed.
