Letter: Slavery is here and everywhere

Many people believe that slavery was abolished more than 150 years ago. It's here, worldwide

Many people believe that slavery was abolished more than 150 years ago. In reality, slavery still exists in countries around the world, including our own ("Janitorial slavery ring nets 20 years," Friday). The International Labor Organization estimates that there are more than 27 million slaves in the world.

The Chester County Abolitionists is an anti-human-trafficking advocacy group that fights modern-day slavery in all its forms. On Thursday, our group and thousands of others around the world participated in the annual End It day. We wore red X's on our hands to show solidarity with those in chains and to raise awareness of the plight of human trafficking.

We also are urging

U.S. Sens. Robert P. Casey Jr. and Pat Toomey to cosponsor the End Modern Slavery Initiative Act, which would raise $1.5 billion to support programs to combat human trafficking and end modern-day slavery.

Abolishing slavery in our lifetime is possible. We hope and pray that Pennsylvania's senators will do their part in this fight.
