No magic bullet to cure the racism disease
I NEVER looked at racism as if it were a disease, but I guess that it is.
I always viewed racism as something that was a choice of the person who practiced it, and that he could be or not be a racist if he so chose. But what is going on in Washington with the conservative GOP and the tea party makes me think otherwise. Maybe they cannot help themselves for their actions - maybe they have the disease of racism!
This disease allows some to legislate other people's rights to live and be the best that they can be, as the hated people become faceless caricatures to them and not people at all.
It is an insidious disease that affects millions of people regardless of their race, religion or financial standing. It infects the mind, the spirit and the body of those that it comes into contact with. It deceives you and causes you to make irrational decisions. And it has been mankind's constant companion for as long as we have existed on the Earth.
The disease of racism affects not only the person who hates, but this disease goes both ways, as each group hates the other. It is an equal-opportunity disease. The disease of racism allows others to deceive you as they control you with lies. The disease of racism allows you to be controlled by others, and for no apparent reason to hate people who you have never met before just because they look different from you, or they think differently than you, or they believe something different than you do! The disease of racism allows people to enslave other people, to minimize the humanity of other human beings until they become less than human.
It is a genetic disease, as you can pass it down from one generation to the next, almost like it is in your DNA! Maybe the disease of racism is hardwired in all human beings.
There is no medicine or cure for this disease of racism! There is no elixir that can cure you, as this disease overcomes your religious beliefs as well as your academic accomplishments. The only cure can come from within, and the realization that we are all the same inside and out, and that we are part of the human race!
And the cure comes from being able to look inside yourself and tell yourself that you were wrong. That is hard for many people to do, but it is the only way to cure yourself.
