Stop knocking Romney, ObamaPresident Obama recently had the audacity to complain that the atmosphere in Washington is "broken," and that there is an absence of "the decency … of ordinary people."I wonder if this "pillar of honor and integrity" would explain how repairing Washington is furthered through negative campaign advertisements in which we are told only why Mitt Romney is a no-good, dirty bum who hates American workers, rather than why we should reelect the president. I am not letting Romney off the hook. He has excessively focused on slamming the president, and will surely continue to do so as the campaign progresses, but who is going to stop the mudslinging? Certainly not Obama, who is in the process of accumulating hundreds of millions of dollars that will be squandered in order to make this the most slop-laden presidential campaign in history. Oren M. Stop knocking Romney, Obama

President Obama recently had the audacity to complain that the atmosphere in Washington is "broken," and that there is an absence of "the decency … of ordinary people."

I wonder if this "pillar of honor and integrity" would explain how repairing Washington is furthered through negative campaign advertisements in which we are told only why Mitt Romney is a no-good, dirty bum who hates American workers, rather than why we should reelect the president.

Romney should release tax returns

Pardon me for stating the obvious: Actions do speak louder than words. Why not release more tax returns? It is not brain surgery Mitt Romney is hiding something.

Nothing heroic about officer's death

No disrespect to the late Officer Brian Lorenzo ("Motorcycle officer dies in collision on I-95," July 9), but I don't understand the hero treatment he received. People are killed in vehicular accidents every day, and very little is made of it. Why the excessive news coverage of the body arriving at a funeral home and his mass of burial at the cathedral?

He was referred to as a "fallen hero." One TV news reporter said he was "slain" on the highway. How so? He did nothing heroic. He was not on duty. He was on his way home from work. He was a victim of a horrible crash.

Other policemen, active and retired, pass away from illnesses and accidents and get no parades or motor escorts. Except for a blurb in the death notices, their deaths go unreported.

Lower Merion pays too well

I am extremely troubled with what occurred at the Lower Merion Board of Commissioners meeting ("Lower Merion panel approves town manager's pay package," Thursday). While the commissioners were courteous in listening concerned residents, all along the majority had every intention of ignoring the voiced opposition and forging ahead with a new outrageously out-of-line salary for Douglas Cleland. Now, the township manager not only earns more than the mayor of Philadelphia or the governor of Pennsylvania, but also more than the president of France or the French prime minister.

I am sure the township manager does excellent work, but that is his job, and to pay him a package worth $275,000 per year for the next two years is unreasonable and absurd. I don't know what the majority of the township commissioners who voted in favor of the $275,000 package were thinking, but I feel as though we are becoming a laughingstock.

Let games continue at Penn State

I strongly object to the idea of punishing Pennsylvania State University by forcing it to cancel its upcoming football season. Many people would be affected. There are the students who came to the university for the football program and would be unable to play.

There will be the loss of income for the people who maintain the stadium and sell the food and beverages. There will be a loss of income for the hotels and motels. There will be a loss of income for all the restaurants and gas stations and other facilities that the one-day visitor or weekend guests would patronize.

There would be the disappointment felt by the loyal alumni and fans who would miss the opportunity of seeing the games. And there would be the difficult problems that Penn State's opponents would face in having to reschedule their football games.

Penn State is facing legal, financial, and even possible criminal charges because of the stupidity and lack of compassion on the part of four people. They should be the ones punished, not everybody else.
