Re: "Eagles won ratings battle over Phillies," Tuesday:
This wouldn't make sense in most cities, but in Philly it's the norm.
I found myself living this as I walked out of the Linc on Sunday after yet another heartbreaking Eagles loss. I have endured many of these melancholic sojourns over the years and am sure to have more in the future. It's just life as a Philadelphia sports fan. Maybe in New York or Chicago, a playoff baseball team would overshadow a football team that continues to disappoint. Not even close in Philly. As I watch the Phillies go after baseball immortality this year, I can't help think that I wish it were the Eagles.
Sure, a championship in baseball, hockey or basketball would be nice for a city that has been grasping for some kind of sports glory for more than 25 years. But it would not cure the ache of the band of lovable losers known as Eagles fans. The fact is the Eagles are, and always will be, Philadelphia's team.
