Letters | Phooey on foie gras ban

IDISAGREE with columnist Stu Bykofsky on his stance to ban foie gras. It's no different from the smoking ban, or worse, a capitulation to the PETA wackos.

It's not government's place to legislate how we eat. Who are you to judge that foie gras is "unnecessary, unhealthy, unkind"? We aren't talking about killing cute pets. The animals used to make foie gras are unintelligent birds and they are born to be slaughtered.

I don't see any difference between raising ducks for foie gras or calves for veal. Raising animals for food is rarely humane. They are stacked in cages alongside thousands of others with little room to move. They are given high doses of antibiotics to fight off diseases caused by such close quarters.

Maybe we should pass a law banning all chicken that's not raised cage-free? What about the kosher process of slaughtering a cow? Their throats are slit while they're wide awake. I suppose you'd like to ban kosher meat, too?

If you don't like the idea of eating foie gras, don't buy it. Me, I think I'll go up to Assouline & Ting and try some. Sounds tasty.
