Maxwell K. Brindle | Student, athlete, 20

Maxwell Knickerbocker Brindle, 20, of Wayne, a Drexel University student and athlete, died June 18 of injuries suffered in a bicycle accident.

Mr. Brindle was riding his bicycle home after spending the night at his cousin's house when he hit a parked car. His mother, Gari Brindle, said that, knowing her son, "he was riding fast and hard with the wind through his hair without a care in the world."

Mr. Brindle had just completed his freshman year at Drexel and was working at the Verizon store in Wayne.

Growing up, he played on local youth basketball, soccer and baseball teams and was a Phillies fan.  In his early teens he spent three summers at Camp Pasquaney in New Hampshire, where he excelled at sports, hiking, sailing, theater and woodcarving, and was chosen most active camper for two years.

He discovered lacrosse in middle school and played on the team at Radnor High School. He graduated from Salisbury School in Connecticut, where he was an All-New England lacrosse player. Last season he played for Drexel. "Max was a solid competitor and would have been a big contributor to our team next year," said Drexel's lacrosse coach, Chris Bates. The brawny, 6-foot-2 player had an exuberant personality, Bates said. "He was larger than life."

Mr. Brindle's favorite class at Drexel was the history of rock-and-roll. He was clever at mimicking celebrity voices including Kermit the Frog and Arnold Schwarzenegger, his mother said. He was an engaging Peter Pan, she said , who could brighten any room. His mother, a former marketing executive for the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News, thought her son might have had a future in broadcasting.

In addition to his mother, Mr. Brindle is survived by his father, Peter; a sister, Alex; an aunt and uncle, Becca and Tom Lieb; and cousins Nikki, Jessi, and Zack Lieb.

A life celebration will be at 10 a.m. July 4 at the Willows, 490 Darby-Paoli Rd., Villanova.

Memorial donations may be made to Camp Pasquaney Scholarship Fund, 19 Pasquaney Lane, Hebron, N.H. 03241.
