John J. Tsucalas, 76, of Philadelphia, a former Pennsylvania deputy auditor general in the Casey administration, died Wednesday, Sept. 21, of pneumonia at Pennsylvania Hospital.

He served from 1989 through July 1991, when he resigned.

In recognition of his contributions, he received commendations from the state Senate and House for "outstanding public service."

In 1992, he considered running on the Republican ticket for auditor general, but decided "it would better serve my party if I did not," he told the Inquirer on Jan. 31, 1992.

In the private sector, Mr. Tsucalas was a chartered financial analyst and principal for 26 years of John James Tsucalas & Co., investment bankers at 15th and Chestnut Streets in Center City.

At various times, he served as vice president of leveraged buyouts and private placements for Butcher & Singer in Philadelphia, and as an investment officer for John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Co. in Boston.

Mr. Tsucalas wrote on economic, financial, and political topics in regional, national, and international publications.

For a time, he broadcast on Philadelphia radio station WFLN-FM each Sunday about the stock market, and he lectured widely.

Until 2000, he welcomed guests each Greek Independence Day, which was celebrated here on or about March 25 - whenever foreign dignitaries were available. The festivities were held at the Liberty Bell on Independence Mall.

The child of Greek immigrant parents, Calliope and James Tsucalas, Mr. Tsucalas was a native of Everett, Mass.

He graduated from Boston Latin School and while there, ran the mile in track. At that time, his class had the largest number of offspring from Greek immigrant parents in the school's history, his family said.

He received a bachelor's degree in economics from what is now Columbia University and pledged Sigma Chi fraternity. He was coxswain of the heavyweight varsity crew. Mr. Tsucalas received his master of business administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

He served as a personnel officer in the Air Force from 1962 to 1966 and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal. He was honorably discharged with the rank of first lieutenant.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Joanne Crane Tsucalas; two sisters; a niece; and a nephew.

A viewing starting at 8 a.m. will be followed by a funeral at 9, both at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 256 S. Eighth St. Interment with full military honors will be at 1:30 p.m. at Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Bucks County.

Donations may be made to the Boston Latin School Association, 27 School St., Suite 300, Boston, Mass. 02108, or to Columbia University Office of Alumni Affairs and Development, 622 W. 113th St., Mail Code 4525, New York, N.Y. 10025. Checks should be marked for "Crew shell in memory of John Tsucalas."
