Susan Yates Van Hoy, 64, of Burlington City, a former teacher in Pennsauken, died of cancer on Monday, Oct. 19, at Samaritan Healthcare and Hospice in Mount Holly.
Susan Yates Van Hoy, 64, of Burlington City, a former teacher in Pennsauken, died of cancer on Monday, Oct. 19, at Samaritan Healthcare and Hospice in Mount Holly.
Mrs. Van Hoy retired in June after teaching business courses for 25 years at the Pennsauken campus of Camden County Technical Schools.
Born in Mount Holly, she graduated from Lenape High School in 1969 and earned a bachelor's degree in education at Radford (Va.) University in 1973, a sister, Grace Leman, said in a phone interview.
"There wasn't anybody she couldn't strike up a conversation with," Leman said.
"That's part of the reason she got into teaching. She loved being with the students. She was their adviser all the 25 years" that she was with the Pennsauken school.
"She was very instrumental in how their lives turned around. By the time they graduated," Leman said, "they were on the right course."
She taught business courses at high schools in Virginia and West Virginia in the 1970s and 1980s before moving her family to Shamong in 1989. They had lived in Burlington for three years.
A longtime member of the Tabernacle United Methodist Church, she was a former president of its women's aide group.
Besides her sister Grace, she is survived by her husband, Phil; sons Christopher, Joshua, and Andrew; and a brother, another sister, and two grandchildren.
A visitation was set from 10 to 10:45 a.m., Monday, Oct. 26, at the United Methodist Church, 166 Carranza Rd., Tabernacle, before an 11 a.m. funeral service there, with interment in Junior Mechanics Cemetery, Tabernacle.
