Alvin Plumer, real estate broker

Alvin "Bud" Plumer was "one of the most respected, trusted, honorable Realtors" in the Greater Philadelphia Association of Realtors, Allan Domb, the group's president, said.

"Not only was he a nice guy," Domb said Thursday, he was "a pleasure to do business with."

Mr. Plumer was, Domb said, "a Philadelphia real estate icon in the eyes of our 2,000 members, but also in the Philadelphia community which he served."

Mr. Domb, head of the Philadelphia firm Allan Domb Real Estate, said Mr. Plumer "mentored hundreds of Realtors who went on to become successful in their real estate careers.

"He was a giant in our business."

On Tuesday, Dec. 9, Mr. Plumer, 89, of Cherry Hill, president of Plumer & Associates Inc. on South Street near Second Street, died of congestive heart failure at Pennsylvania Hospital.

Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Plumer graduated from Central High School, was a frequent organizer of his class reunions, and earned a bachelor's degree in business at Temple University.

He then joined Plumer Realty, founded by his parents in the neighborhood where the firm now stands.

"His parents were brokers, and he was, and now his daughter is a broker in the firm," Mr. Plumer's wife, Pearl, said.

"He did not retire," she said. "I would drive him to the office and he would work for a few hours and then come home. He liked to do that" a few days a week until recently.

Their daughter, Mona, said that in the 1960s he was involved in the development of Queen Village.

And in the 1990s, she said, he was a cochairman of the South Street Headhouse District, "doing everything possible to keep the street a very positive place."

A former vice president and member of the board of directors of the Greater Philadelphia Association of Realtors, Mr. Plumer is a member of its Hall of Fame.

He also was a former president of the South Philadelphia Realty Board and the Center City Council of Realtors.

A former vice president of the University of Pennsylvania Real Estate Society, he was a member of the National Association of Realtors and its Pennsylvania arm.

A past chairman of the Professional Standards Committee of the Philadelphia Board of Realtors, he was a delegate to the Delaware Valley Council of Realtors.

Besides his wife and daughter, Mr. Plumer is survived by a sister and a grandson.

A visitation was set from 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, at Platt Memorial Chapels, 2001 Berlin Rd., Cherry Hill, before a 1 p.m. funeral service there.
