Charles R. "Bud" Hollenbach, 89, of Sellersville, a legendary offensive backfield coach for the Pennridge High School Rams, died Saturday, Oct. 18, at Abington Memorial Hospital of injuries sustained in a car accident.

Mr. Hollenbach was riding in a car driven by his wife, Margaret, 84, after watching their son Jeff coach a Saturday night football game between his Rams and the Central Bucks High School South Titans.

As the vehicle left the Central Bucks South parking lot in Warrington, it struck an unoccupied car. The impact triggered a chain reaction with two other vehicles. Five patients were treated at Abington Memorial Hospital. On Tuesday, Mrs. Hollenbach was recovering at home.

From 1952 until his retirement in 1985, Mr. Hollenbach taught physical education and health in the Pennridge School District at the high school level. A devoted and supportive teacher, he was highly regarded by his students, his family said in a tribute.

He was best known as an offensive backfield coach for the Rams for 25 years, although he also served as an assistant tennis and basketball coach and as head cheerleading coach, his family said.

Mr. Hollenbach mentored and encouraged generations of players and students. He was inducted into the Pennridge-Quakertown Area Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012.

Born in Allentown, Mr. Hollenbach was a 1943 graduate of Allentown High School, where he played football. Mr. Hollenbach served with the Army in the Pacific at the end of World War II.

After his return to the United States, Mr. Hollenbach earned a bachelor's degree in education from East Stroudsburg State Teachers College, where he played football before injuries ended his playing career.

He completed a master's degree in education at Lehigh University.

A member of the Brethren in Christ Church, Souderton, Mr. Hollenbach was a lay leader who founded a Saturday morning men's group and taught Sunday school.

Previously, he taught Sunday school at First United Methodist Church, Perkasie.

In addition to his son, and wife of 62 years, Mr. Hollenbach is survived by another son, Mark; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers.

A funeral service will be at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Calvary Church, 820 Route 113, Souderton. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. A private burial with full military honors will be conducted in Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown.

Donations may be made for a new high school weight room to Pennridge School District, Bud Hollenbach Memorial Contribution, 1200 N. Fifth St., Perkasie, Pa. 18944, Attn: Dr. Bruce Bovard.
