American Idol contestant Michael Johns, 35, who appeared in Season 7 of the hit Fox singing competition and was voted off in an eighth-round stunner, has died.

The network and his family released statements confirming the Australian-born singer's death Friday. The Orange County (Calif.) Coroner's Office was investigating; there were reports that linked Mr. Johns' death to a blood clot in his ankle.

Fox called Mr. Johns "an incredible talent" and a part of the show's family who would be missed.

Mr. Johns had never been in the show's bottom three vote-getters when he was eliminated in April 2008. After Idol, he released the albums Hold Back My Heart in 2009 and Love and Sex in 2012.

He is survived by his wife of seven years, Stacey. - AP
