Robert J. Kirkpatrick III, 80, investment adviser

Robert J. Kirkpatrick III, 80, of Bryn Mawr, who retired in 1993 as a senior vice president in the Philadelphia office of Merrill Lynch, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, of heart failure at Bryn Mawr Terrace, a senior-care community.

Mr. Kirkpatrick was a board member of the Harriton Association, which administers Harriton House, a 1704 home owned by Lower Merion Township.

Born in Memphis, Mr. Kirkpatrick graduated from the Haverford School in 1950 and earned a bachelor's degree in English literature at Dartmouth College in 1954.

He served in the Marine Corps from 1955 to 1959, flying fixed-wing planes and helicopters, and completed his military career as a Marine Reserve captain in 1968.

In 1959, he joined Merrill Lynch in Philadelphia, where he spent his career as an investment adviser.

In 1963, he married Jennifer Howell, daughter of the commanding officer of the Royal Air Force Technical Command in Henlow, England.

Mr. Kirkpatrick was a member of the Savoy Opera Company and two a cappella singing groups, the Commuters and the 23 Trolley.

He was a member of the Merion Cricket Club, the Racquet Club, and the Union League.

Besides his wife of 48 years, Mr. Kirkpatrick is survived by sons Scott and R. Bruce; a daughter, Libby; a brother; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service was scheduled at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Church of the Redeemer, 230 Pennswood Rd., Bryn Mawr.
