Madeline Hartsell Lamb, 71, a Chester County lawyer for 34 years, died Sunday, July 8, of glioblastoma, a brain tumor, at the Cary, N.C., home of her daughter, Amanda Lamb Griffin.

After graduating from law school in 1978, Mrs. Lamb was in a West Chester law practice with her husband, William Lamb, who later became Chester County district attorney and a Pennsylvania Supreme Court justice.

Mrs. Lamb then conducted a solo practice of family law in West Chester from 1985 to 2012, her daughter said.

Mrs. Lamb was a member of the board of directors at Chester County Hospital from 1972 through 2007.

During that time, she was chair of the bylaws committee and the joint conference committee, "guiding them through sometimes-difficult discussions and processes," according to a 2007 board resolution.

She brought "expertise and insight to many projects," including those of other committees, the hospital resolution stated. At the Chester County Art Association, she was a member of the board of directors from 1999 to 2005 and for a time was its vice president.

"She donated a huge contemporary sculpture by Joyce de Guatemala to the art center for our outdoor sculptures," a spokeswoman said.

Born in Concord, N.C., Mrs. Lamb graduated from Concord High School in 1958 and earned an Angier Biddle Duke scholarship to Duke University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in English and Russian in 1962.

After working as a teacher and saleswoman, her daughter said, Mrs. Lamb graduated in 1978 from the Villanova University School of Law.

She lived in Malvern from 1962 to 1974, Devon from 1974 to 1983, and Paoli since then.

In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Lamb is survived by a son, Josh; a sister; three grandchildren; and her former husband.

A memorial service was set for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Paoli Presbyterian Church, 225 S. Valley Rd., Paoli.
