Joy Bennett Englebert, 70, of Wayne, a retired sales manager for Chilton Publishing Co., died of cancer Friday, Feb. 24, at Whitehorse Village in Newtown Square.

In the mid-1970s, Mrs. Englebert joined the international sales staff at Chilton in Radnor. As one of the first women on the sales staff, she was a "true pioneer," traveling to countries including China, Russia, and Poland, a daughter, Heather Wertley, said.

In the early 1980s, Mrs. Englebert became regional sales manager for Chilton's Jewelers' Circular-Keystone Magazine, a leading trade publication for the jewelry industry. She won numerous sales awards before retiring in 2003, her daughter said.

Mrs. Englebert grew up in Rosemont and was a lifelong summer resident of Cape May. After graduating from Radnor High School in 1959, she married Joseph T. Englebert. The couple, who had three daughters, later divorced.

Before joining Chilton, Mrs. Englebert worked for the Main Line Times, the Suburban and Wayne Times, and Radnor Graphic Arts.

For 20 years, she was married to Frederick A. Stanley. He died in 2005.

Mrs. Englebert traveled abroad with her husband and more recently to Russia, Denmark, and the Mediterranean with two of her daughters.

She was a bird watcher and was happiest cultivating her gardens in Wayne and Cape May, and spending time with her family at the Shore, Heather Wertley said.

Mrs. Englebert traced her lineage to John Howland, a passenger on the Mayflower whose descendants settled in Cape May in the early 1700s.

She was a member of St. Davids Golf Club, the Corinthian Yacht Club of Cape May, the Cottagers' Association of Cape May, the Old Eagle Garden Club in Strafford, and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.

In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Englebert is survived by daughters Laura Snow and Lisa; three grandchildren; and her former husband.

A funeral will be at noon Friday, March 2, at Wayne Presbyterian Church, 125 E. Lancaster Ave. Friends may call from 11 a.m. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 3, at Cold Spring Presbyterian Church, 780 Seashore Rd., Cape May.

Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Box 22718, Oklahoma City, Okla. 73123.
