Nacianceno Largoza, 84, a family doctor

Nacianceno T. Largoza, 84, of Drexel Hill, a family physician who was active in the Filipino community and in medical societies in the Philadelphia area, died of heart failure Saturday, Dec. 24, at Delaware County Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Largoza completed medical training in the Philippines and practiced general medicine in his native Quezon province for nine years before immigrating to the United States in 1966.

He interned at Northeastern Hospital in Philadelphia, completed a residency at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital, and passed the Pennsylvania and New Jersey Medical Boards and the Federal Licensing Examination.

For 25 years, Dr. Largoza practiced family medicine in the Point Breeze section of South Philadelphia and in Lansdowne, retiring in 1999.

He was on the staff of St. Agnes and Graduate Hospitals in Philadelphia and Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Drexel Hill.

He was past president of the Philadelphia Academy of Family Practice and a member of the Filipino Medical Society of Greater Philadelphia.

Dr. Largoza, who earned a medical degree from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, was past president of the University of Santo Tomas Medical Alumni Association-USA and was founding president of the tristate chapter.

After the deadly earthquake and eruption of the Mount Pinatubo volcano in 1991, he chaired the Philippine Earthquake Relief Program-Delaware Valley. He was a past president of the Filipino Executive Council of Greater Philadelphia and was an active member of the Filipino American Association of Philadelphia.

Dr. Largoza, known as "Nen" or "Nenar," grew up in Tiaong. During World War II, his family's home was burned by the Japanese, and as a teenager he served with guerrillas fighting the Japanese. Later, in the United States, he served in the Army Reserve, retiring as a lieutenant colonel in the early 1980s. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Dr. Largoza and his wife, Isabel, met in high school in the Philippines. They married in 1957.

In retirement, he and his wife spent three months a year in their home in Lucena, Philippines. They traveled all over the world and made frequent trips to visit children and grandchildren in California, Texas, and New York.

In addition to his wife, Dr. Largoza is survived by sons Nonato, Nelvin, and Nacian; a daughter, Miel Ania; and nine grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at St. Augustine Church, 243 N. Lawrence St., Philadelphia 19106. Burial will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Marple Township.
