Richard D. Raymond, 89, an advertising sales executive, died of pneumonia Monday, Nov. 7, at the White Horse Village retirement community in Newtown Square.

Born in Albany, N.Y., Mr. Raymond earned a bachelor's degree at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., in 1945. After training as a Navy fighter pilot, he was recalled to active duty during the Korean conflict as a flight instructor in Pensacola, Fla.

His wife, Mary Louise, said that in the 1960s, Mr. Raymond began courses at Main Line School Night for those interested in flight.

Mr. Raymond worked in the Philadelphia offices of Curtis Publishing Co., Newsweek, and Dun's Review before retiring in 1991.

In retirement, he was a volunteer for 13 years at the Coatesville VA Medical Center, where he was named outstanding volunteer of the year in 1997.

Mr. Raymond was a member of the Society of Quiet Birdmen, which James Thurber in a 1937 issue of the New Yorker magazine said was a secret society, but "just who and how many belong is kept secret, maybe because no one knows."

Mr. Raymond sang with the Chordbusters, a barbershop group in West Chester, and with the Village Singers at his retirement community.

In addition to his wife of 57 years, Mr. Raymond is survived by sons Peter and Whitridge; daughters Rebecca and Mary; two sisters; and six grandchildren.

A life celebration was set for 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at Paoli Presbyterian Church, 225 S. Valley Rd., Paoli, followed by a reception there.
