Reginald Curry | Jazz musician, 59

Reginald Curry, 59, of Olney, a Philadelphia jazz musician, died of liver failure Tuesday, Oct. 18, at Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia.

Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Curry graduated from Bishop Neumann High School.

A friend, Carvel Watson, said that after studying in a Model Cities Arts Program in Philadelphia in the 1970s, Mr. Curry became a bassist with Wiusie Metribu, a Philadelphia quintet.

Mr. Curry played and recorded with vibraphonist Khan Jamal and drummer Sonny Murray in the 1980s, Watson said.

A brother, Darryl, said that Mr. Curry then performed with the Sound of Freedom, for which he composed "Suggie's Soul 'n' Blues" to honor his father, James, nicknamed Suggie.

Mr. Curry performed with that group from the late 1990s and, from 2001 to 2009, at the Top Shelf, a West Philadelphia jazz club.

Besides his brother Darryl, Mr. Curry is survived by sons Jamil and Jakyle; his former wife, Yvette Curry; his companion, Sherrie Grimes; and another brother.

A memorial service was set for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, at True Light Fellowship Church, 6400 Ardleigh St., East Mount Airy. Burial is to be private.
