Gloria Jones-Johnson | Teacher, 77

Gloria Jones-Johnson, 77, of West Philadelphia, a retired third-grade teacher, died of Alzheimer's disease Wednesday, Jan. 19, at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

Gloria Jones-Johnson, 77, of West Philadelphia, a retired third-grade teacher, died of Alzheimer's disease Wednesday, Jan. 19, at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

Mrs. Jones-Johnson grew up in West Philadelphia, where she met her future husband, Curtis H. Johnson Sr. After graduating from John Bartram High School in 1951, she held several clerical positions, including one with the Philadelphia Police Department, and worked in a sweater factory before her marriage in 1956.

While raising four children, she was active in her church, was a reading aide at Harrington School in West Philadelphia, sold Avon products, and belonged to Today's Women, a social club.

She and her husband earned bachelor's degrees at night from St. Joseph's University. After her graduation in 1984, she became a teacher at Rhodes School in West Philadelphia. She retired in 1996 when she became ill.

Mrs. Jones-Johnson enjoyed decorating her home and doing arts and crafts with her grandchildren. She and her children traveled to Europe and Africa.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by sons Curtis Jr., Vincent, and Christopher; a daughter, Kimberly; and eight grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 5015 Woodland Ave., Philadelphia, where Mrs. Jones-Johnson was a church usher, deaconess, and member of the choir and Christian Culture Guild. Friends may call from 9 a.m. Burial will be in Fernwood Cemetery, Lansdowne.
