Evelyn Carrowon Robinson, 88, formerly of Wissinoming, a Cub Scout den mother for 20 years and a gifted public speaker who encouraged Weight Watchers dieters, died of cancer Saturday, Nov. 13, at Davis Hospice in Cheyenne, Wyo.

Mrs. Robinson developed public-speaking and leadership skills through practice and feedback as a member of the Toastmasters International club at the Frankford Arsenal. She served as club president for many years.

In the 1960s and 1970s, she worked for Weight Watchers, using her skills to educate dieters about healthy eating.

Mrs. Robinson was a lifelong Philadelphian until moving to Cheyenne three years ago to live with a daughter, Virginia Jorden. She graduated from Kensington High School and then was a long-distance operator for Bell Telephone for 10 years.

In 1956, she married Hugh J. Robinson. They met when she asked him for a ride on his motorcycle. "She was a high-spirited person," her daughter said.

When her sons were Cub Scouts at Hope Lutheran Church in Torresdale, she volunteered to be a den mother and stayed on after her sons outgrew the troop.

Mrs. Robinson was an avid bowler and quilter and traveled all over the globe, her daughter said. She was a member of St. Timothy Roman Catholic Church in Mayfair and was active with the seniors club at Our Lady of Ransom Roman Catholic Church in Oxford Circle.

She had a positive outlook on life, her daughter said, and was known to say: "There were a lot of things I didn't do, but it doesn't disturb me because of all the things I did."

After moving out West, she had The Inquirer delivered so she could keep up with local news, Jorden said.

In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Robinson is survived by sons Hugh and Steven; a daughter, Colleen Kletzman; a brother; a sister; and seven grandchildren. Her husband died in 2001.

A service is private.
