Services have been set for Coast Guard Petty Officer Second Class Jason S. Moletzsky, 26, of Norristown, who died in a midair crash Oct. 29 off the California coast.
A visitation is to take place from 8 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Church, 120 Jefferson St., Swedesburg, followed by an 11 a.m. Funeral Mass there.
Petty Officer Moletzsky is survived by parents John and Lisa, maternal grandmother Elizabeth Dougherty, sisters Rebecca and Amanda, and companion Christina Biscardi.
An aviation maintenance technician, he was one of seven Coast Guard personnel in a C-130 searching for a missing boatman when his aircraft collided with a two-person Marine Corps AH-1W Super Cobra helicopter off San Clemente Island.
On Nov. 2, a search for the nine missing people was turned into a recovery mission after nine aircraft searched a 644-square-mile area with water up to 2,000 feet deep.
A 2002 graduate of Norristown High School, Petty Officer Moletzsky enlisted last year for a second six-year term with the Coast Guard.
After boot camp, he had been assigned to a Coast Guard station in Miami Beach, Fla., where his team dealt with drug interdiction and search and rescue. After becoming an aviation maintenance technician, he worked for four years in Opa Locka, Fla.
In July, Petty Officer Moletzsky was transferred to the Coast Guard Air Station in Sacramento, and recently qualified to work in rescue mission teams on C-130s. He earned the Coast Guard Commendation Medal.
"He was a great, great kid," his father told a reporter in a Nov. 2 Inquirer story. "I don't think I could have asked for a better son. When this happened, I lost my best friend."
