James McCracken, 87, banker, railroad man

James H. McCracken, 87, a former Philadelphia railroad and bank executive, died Oct. 30 of respiratory failure at St. John's on the Lake, a retirement community in Milwaukee.

His son James H. Jr. said that Mr. McCracken worked in the treasury department of the Pennsylvania Railroad from 1950 to 1966, then transferred to the Center City headquarters of Provident National Bank, from which he retired as a senior trust investment officer in 1990.

He and his wife, Joan, lived in Paoli from June 1954 to January 2005. From the late 1970s through the 1990s, he was a board member of the Tredyffrin Township Library.

A 1940 graduate of Monrovia (Ind.) High School, Mr. McCracken was a financial specialist with the 84th Infantry Division in Europe during World War II and served in the Army Reserve until 1952.

Mr. McCracken earned his bachelor's degree in journalism from Hanover (Ind.) College in 1950, where he was coeditor of his college newspaper. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta and Alpha Phi Gamma fraternities.

A past American Legion Post commander, Mr. McCracken was a member of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge and the Railsplitters, an organization of 84th Division veterans.

He was a president of the Philadelphia Securities Association in the late 1980s, a member of the Union League, and a Mason.

Besides his son James H. Jr., Mr. McCracken is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joan; a son, Guyer; a daughter, Laurie Shawger; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service took place Saturday in the chapel of St. John's on the Lake.

Barring a trade, the Flyers will be Team Patchwork for at least the next month. If their latest game is any indication, it could be a wild stretch. Colorado took a 2-0 lead in the first 5½ minutes, eventually sent shelled goalie Ray Emery to the bench, and beat the slumping Flyers, 5-4.
