Father O'Malley was president of Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles from 1991 to 1999. He led John Carroll University in Cleveland from 1980 to 1988.

The Milton, Mass., native was ordained a priest in 1961. He had degrees from Boston College and Fordham University and had a doctorate in early Christian literature and theology from Nijmegen University in the Netherlands.
