Thomas C. Egan Jr., 77, of Wayne, a retired stockbroker, died of prostate cancer Sunday at Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood.
For almost 30 years, Mr. Egan commuted to the New York Stock Exchange from his home in Chestnut Hill and later in Wayne. He was proficient with investments related to Canadian oil production, and made lasting friendships on trips to Canada, said his son, Thomas III. He retired in 2000 but got bored, his son said, and went to work, helping maintain trucks on the night shift at UPS in West Chester for several years.
Mr. Egan grew up in Mount Airy. He graduated from Portsmouth Priory in Rhode Island and attended Georgetown University. During the Korean War, he served in the Army Signal Corps in occupied Japan.
After his discharge, he earned a bachelor's degree from St. Joseph's University. He was a stockbroker in Philadelphia for several years before going to New York.
As a youth, he played baseball, basketball, and football, and he later played sports with his children and grandchildren. In the 1960s and '70s, he helped coach summer basketball leagues in South Philadelphia and East Falls. Several of his players went on to successful basketball careers, including Jim O'Brien, a former 76ers coach who is coach of the Indiana Pacers.
A passionate hockey fan, he had season tickets to Flyers games for more than 40 years.
In addition to his son, he is survived by his wife of 48 years, Margaret Noonan Egan; daughters Margaret Sukonik and Mary Kelly Goggin; a sister; a brother; and nine grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. today at Our Lady of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, 35 Old Eagle School Rd., Strafford.
