Ignacio Ponseti, 95, an Iowa doctor who developed a special treatment for clubfoot in children, has died.
University of Iowa spokesman Tom Moore said Dr. Ponseti died Sunday at University Hospitals in Iowa City.
Hospital spokesman Paul Etre said Dr. Ponseti suffered a stroke last Tuesday.
The Ponseti method uses casts and gentle manipulation as alternatives to surgery to correct clubfoot, a condition in which the foot is turned in sharply. It can leave children crippled if left untreated or improperly treated.
Dr. Ponseti was born in Spain in 1914 and came to the University of Iowa in the 1940s. He retired from University Hospitals in 1984 but went to the hospital nearly every day for 20 more years.
