The Rev. Lee Edward Peace, 91, of Berwyn, who retired in 2000 after 40 years as a Baptist pastor in Camden and Philadelphia, died of renal failure on June 26 at Bryn Mawr Hospital.
In 1971 and 1972, Mr. Peace was president of the Baptist Ministers Conference of Philadelphia and Vicinity.
From the 1960s until 2004, his wife, Mamie, said, he was the recording secretary for that conference, and during the same years was a member of the board of directors for the Hampton (Va.) Ministers Conference.
Mr. Peace began his ministry at 17 at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Southwest Philadelphia.
His first pastorate was at Friendship Baptist Church, Camden, in the 1960s, his wife said, before he became the organizing pastor in 1966 at Faith Baptist Church, Camden.
In the 1980s, his wife said, he became pastor of what is now Word Tabernacle Baptist Church at 52d Street and Chester Avenue in West Philadelphia.
Mr. Peace also had a 20-year career as a district clerk with the post office in Philadelphia, retiring in 1972.
Born in South Norfolk, Va., he graduated from the academic Latin program at Overbrook High School, attended what is now Virginia Union University in Richmond, and graduated in 1954 from the Theological Seminary of the Reformed Episcopal Church in Philadelphia.
Mr. Peace also completed an extension course at Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester and earned an honorary doctorate of divinity from Baltimore College of the Bible.
He was a member of the Eastern Keystone Baptist Association and the National Baptist Convention.
Mr. Peace is survived by his wife of 47 years; a son, Lee Edward Jr.; daughters Jacqueline, Lynnell Peace-Trent, and Carmmella Hall-Holloway; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
A viewing was set for 8 to 10 a.m. Monday at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 5015 Woodland Ave., followed by a funeral service there. Burial is to be in Fernwood Cemetery, Lansdowne.
