Sharlelle N. Butler, 27, prison guard

Sharlelle N. Butler, 27, of Mount Airy, a state prison guard and former Army military police officer in Iraq, died of pancreatic cancer last Thursday in Chestnut Hill Hospital.

A 1999 graduate of Bodine High School for International Affairs, Miss Butler entered Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Kappa sorority. She received a bachelor's degree there in 2006.

Miss Butler joined the Army Reserve in 2000 while in college, said her mother, Lynnell, a Philadelphia police officer in the 17th District. Her education was interrupted when her unit was activated, and she served in Ramadi, Iraq, in 2005 and 2006.

Miss Butler was a correctional officer at the state prison in Chester for the last year.

Besides her mother, Miss Butler is survived by a sister, Nigelle, and her friend Andre Harper. Her father, Earl, died in 2007.

Friends may call after 8 a.m. Saturday at Oxford Presbyterian Church, 8501 Stenton Ave., where a funeral service will begin at 10. Burial will be in Whitemarsh Memorial Park, Prospectville.

NEWS
It's speculation whether the Washington Wizards played inspired tonight, but it was obvious that the 76ers did not play inspired defense in the third quarter. On the night that longtime Wizards owner Pollin died of a rare brain disorder, his team played better than it has played for much of this season in a 108-107 win over the 76ers.
