Maurice Albertson | Peace Corps creator, 90

Maurice Albertson, 90, an architect of the Peace Corps, has died.

He died Sunday at Columbine Care Center West in Fort Collins, Colo., family friend Mims Harris said. He fell ill after a trip to Indonesia in November and did not recover.

He and two fellow Colorado State University researchers responded to a request in 1960 from the U.S. government for a model to encourage the nation's youths to serve in Third World countries. They wrote a book that set up the basic design of the Peace Corps.

The program was officially launched in 1961. - AP
