Edward Volkman, 67, of Wynnewood, a psychiatrist and civil rights activist, died Wednesday of cancer at Lankenau Hospital.
Dr. Volkman was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., and graduated from Stuyvesant High School, where he was a member of the 1957 city championship football team.
He graduated from Williams College in 1962 and Howard University Medical School in 1968. Dr. Volkman completed his psychiatric residency at Albert Einstein School of Medicine in New York City.
He moved to Philadelphia in 1974 to join the Hahnemann Medical School. There, he served as director of residency training in psychiatry, a position he later held at the Temple University School of Medicine.
He was also employed as medical director for Northwestern Human Services.
He maintained a practice in Haverford and was a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry.
In addition to his passion for teaching, Dr. Volkman was a civil rights activist in Philadelphia, New York and "down South," according to family members. He participated in civil rights actions in the summer of 1966 in South Carolina that forced the integration of hospitals there.
His wife, Philadelphia Administrative Law Judge Janice Cohen Volkman, remembered her husband as a "deeply humble . . . idealistic" man who liked to help others "without aggrandizing himself."
She added: "He was superbly intelligent, but supremely humble about his gift. He wanted to make a difference in the lives of his children and events in the world."
She said he was "an incredible husband, father and grandfather."
Daughter Sara Volkman Shack agreed. "He showed generosity of spirit, time and energy," she said. "His achievements were not what he did, but who he was."
In addition to his wife and daughter, Dr. Volkman is survived by another daughter, Rachel Volkman Kushel, and three grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow at Society Hill Synagogue, 418 Spruce St. Memorial donations may be made to the Edward Volkman, M.D., Endowment Scholarship Fund, Howard University Medical School, 2225 Georgia Ave. N.W., Suite 922, Washington, D.C. 20059.
