Hazel W. Brogden | Businesswoman, 88

Hazel W. Brogden, 88, who operated a beauty shop in West Philadelphia for many years, died July 4 of heart failure at Roxborough Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Brogden, who was married to the late William Brogden Jr., a Philadelphia firefighter, operated four beauty salons, including two she owned, from 1939 to 1976. Her signature salon, Hazel Brogden's Beauty Salon, was at 5147 Walnut St. In its day, it was the place to go for a style, and it was a social and professional hub. She lived above the shop.

Mrs. Brogden closed the shop in 1976 and moved to California to be with her daughter, Patricia McClees, who died in 1979.

Mrs. Brogden then returned to Philadelphia and worked in several shops in the city. She had been a resident of the Pavilion Apartments, a senior living facility in Wynnefield, since 1985.

Mrs. Brogden, who studied ballet as a teenager, loved dance and the theater and served as a founding board member and longtime supporter of the Philadelphia Dance Company, better known as Philadanco.

Always active, Mrs. Brogden was a staff member of the Haddington Multi-Services for Older Adults Center and was a member of the National Caucus and Center on Black Aged. At the Pavilion Apartments, she was on the tenants' council and was the choreographer for the Pavilion Performers, a dance and drama troupe.

She is survived by a granddaughter, Jodi McClees; a niece, Carol Crecy; and a nephew, Michael Matthews.

A celebration of her life will be from 3 to 6 p.m., with a service at 4 p.m., Sunday at the Philadelphia Dance Company, 9 N. Preston St., Philadelphia 19104, where memorial donations also may be made. Burial is private.

History suggests that this is going to come to an end soon. History also suggests it won't end the way Jeffrey Lurie envisioned when Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb became the Eagles' dynamic duo.
