Rita M. Coyne | Shop owner, 91

Rita M. Coyne, 91, of Ambler, a shop owner in Chestnut Hill for 30 years, died Wednesday at St. Mary Manor in Lansdale.

Miss Coyne graduated from Cecilian Academy in Germantown and then worked for John Wanamaker's department store in Philadelphia.

She sold couture clothing in Wanamaker's exclusive Tribout Shop and eventually became the jewelry buyer for Wanamaker's.

In the early 1950s she opened the Rita Coyne Shop on Germantown Avenue in Chestnut Hill, selling women's clothing, jewelry and accessories.

She was a mentor to many young women who worked at the store over the years, her niece Deirdre C. Coyne said.

Miss Coyne was an officer with the Chestnut Hill Business Association.

She helped set up a Nativity display on Germantown Avenue and arranged for Christmas carols during the holidays.

After retiring in the mid-1980s, she volunteered at the Dominican Retreat House in Elkins Park and with the Catholic League for Persons with Disabilities.

She also volunteered several days a week at St. Joseph's Villa, a continuing care facility in Flourtown. She was compassionate, her niece said, and helped care for sick friends and relatives.

Miss Coyne enjoyed art, music, theater and travel.

In addition to her niece, she is survived by niece Rita M. Bollinger.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 259 Forest Ave. Ambler.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken.

History suggests that this is going to come to an end soon. History also suggests it won't end the way Jeffrey Lurie envisioned when Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb became the Eagles' dynamic duo.
