Charles W. Remer | Conrail manager, 85

Charles W. Remer, 85, of Ardmore, a retired Conrail freight manager and aide to special-needs children, died of liver disease Friday at Bryn Mawr Terrace.

Mr. Remer grew up on Maryland's Eastern Shore and played on his high school soccer team. During World War II he served in the Army Medical Corps in England, Belgium and Germany.

After his discharge, he was a freight sales representative for the Pennsylvania Railroad. In the 1970s, he joined Conrail and became the company's manager of market development for paper products.

After retiring from Conrail, he was a bus driver for the Lower Merion School District for more than 13 years and was honored for driving 150,000 miles without an accident. In recent years he was a bus aide for physically and mentally challenged students. He adored children, said his wife, Edna Stroup Remer, and was devoted to the students and to his nieces and nephews. He retired from the school district in 2006.

In addition to his wife of 56 years, Mr. Remer is survived by sisters Marion Riley, Anne Voelmle and Augusta Myers, and a brother, Richard.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Toppitzer Funeral Home, 2900 State Rd., Drexel Hill. Burial will be Monday in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, Pa.

History suggests that this is going to come to an end soon. History also suggests it won't end the way Jeffrey Lurie envisioned when Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb became the Eagles' dynamic duo.
