Toby A. Greco | Obstetrician, 91

Toby A. Greco, 91, formerly of Drexel Hill, a retired South Philadelphia obstetrician and gynecologist, died July 17 of heart failure at home in West Chester.

Dr. Greco, who opened his practice in 1948, cared for three generations of women, said his daughter and office manager, Deborah, and delivered more than 5,000 babies. After he stopped deliveries in 1976, he continued to care for gynecological patients until he was injured in a car accident in 1999 while driving home from a house call.

A graduate of South Philadelphia High School, Dr. Greco earned a bachelor's degree from Villanova University, where he was on the swim team. He earned a medical degree from Temple University.

During World War II, he was a physician in the Navy aboard an LST, a tank landing ship, in the South Pacific.

He completed a residency at Methodist Hospital in obstetrics and gynecology. He was affiliated with St. Agnes Medical Center and Methodist Hospital, where he was chief of staff for several years, and taught at Thomas Jefferson University.

In addition to his daughter, Dr. Greco is survived by a son, Toby Jr., and three grandchildren. His wife of 61 years, Dorothy Langill Greco, died in 2004.

A Funeral Mass will be said at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow at SS. Philip and James Church, Route 30 and Ship Road, Exton. Friends may call at 10:30 a.m.
