Thomas A. Cunningham Sr., 74, of Cherry Hill, a dentist in Gloucester City for more than 30 years, died from asbestosis-related lung cancer Thursday at his home.

Dr. Cunningham graduated from Woodbury High School. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a degree in dental science from the University of Pennsylvania. He worked holidays and summers at various jobs to earn spending money, including wrapping pipes with asbestos, said his wife, JoAnne Ware Cunningham.

He served in the Navy for two years as a dental officer in Camp Lejeune, N.C., before establishing his practice.

He was outgoing, his wife said, and missed his patients after he retired in the late 1990s - but not the paperwork. He enjoyed summers at his vacation home in Avalon, N.J., and socializing with his neighbors.

Dr. Cunningham was a member of the American and New Jersey Dental Associations and American Legion Post 281 in Gloucester Township.

In addition to his wife of 50 years, Dr. Cunningham is survived by a son, Thomas; a daughter, Sandra Dromgoole; a sister; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Grace Episcopal Church, 19 E. Kings Highway, Haddonfield. Friends may call from 10 a.m. Burial will be in the church memorial garden.
