Boy, 11, among 4 charged in flash-mob attacks

AN 11-YEAR-OLD BOY is among four people who have been arrested for allegedly participating in a mob that wrought chaos on Center City on Friday night.

Police identified Raymond Gatling, 19, of Oakdale Street near 26th, as the lone adult arrested along with three juveniles - ages 11, 16 and 17 - for allegedly participating in a youth mob of 20 to 40 people, police said.

Witnesses said the group knocked over whatever was in front of them and targeted pedestrians at random.

About 9:05 p.m., the mob robbed and assaulted a 33-year-old man at 15th Street near Sansom, police said. Just a few moments later, a 59-year-old man was beaten by the same mob at Juniper Street near Walnut, according to police.

Both victims were taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where they were treated and released.

Police said all four suspects were arrested within 20 minutes of the first incident.

The attacks took place a little more than a month after a mob of about 100 youths assaulted people in North Philadelphia and Center City.

Those arrested in Friday's havoc have been charged with assault, robbery and related offenses.
