West Philly double shooting leaves one man dead

A gunman snuck up next to a Dodge Neon at a stop light and opened fire on the two unsuspecting occupants.

A man and a woman were shot while they were stopped at a traffic light in a Dodge Neon in West Philadelphia on Saturday night, police said.

The shooting unfolded shortly after 6 p.m. on Girard Avenue near Merion. A gunman sneaked up next to the passenger side of the car and opened fire, shooting the 30-year-old male passenger in the head and chest, a law enforcement source said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 26-year-old woman, who was behind the wheel, was shot once in the chest and twice in the left arm. She was admitted to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in critical condition.

The victims' names were not released. Police had no description of the gunman. Tipsters can contact the Homicide Unit at 215-686-3334.
