Hurricane Gert could churn surf at the Shore

Rip currents are a related concern.

Tropical storm Gert has now become the second Atlantic hurricane of the season, but it will stay well offshore, posing a threat to ships at sea, but not to property on land.

Still, the storm will churn up seas at the Shore and promote the development of dangerous rip currents, which have been cited in at least five drownings along the coast so far this year.

The National Weather Service has issued a small-craft advisory from Tuesday afternoon through noon Wednesday for New Jersey coastal waters. The service says there is a moderate risk of rip currents at the beaches through Wedesday.

In the meantime, rain is likely Tuesday in the Philadelphia region and at the Shore with dense fog posing a hazard at night, the NWS says. Temperatures will stay below 80. Partly sunny to mostly sunny skies are forecast for Wednesday, with highs in the upper 80s.

Philadelphia International Airport said the rainy weather was affecting some flights and urged fliers to check with their airlines for possible delays.
