Beware of black ice Thursday a.m.; bundle up for Eagles parade

Congested roads and overloaded public transit remain concerns for the throngs traveling to the Eagles' Super Bowl parade – and in some parts of the region add weather to the list.

Temperatures have fallen into the 20s, and the National Weather Service advises that any remnants of Wednesday's messy amalgam of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and then soaking rain are freezing solid.

That could create a fresh crop of black ice, said Chad Shafer, meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, which has posted a special weather advisory.

Some roads, particularly untreated ones, "likely will become slippery," he said. Temperatures in the city dropped below freezing after midnight, and earlier to the north and west where some places also picked up an inch of snow

Thursday is going to be dry, save for a stray flurry, and the sun should rule throughout the parade, but the air is going to have a bite. A steady parade headwind will blow from the northwest just under 10 mph down Broad Street, which sometimes mutates into a wind tunnel. (Although buildings block some winds in the city, they also can channel winds along certain corridors.)

"We have wind chills in the teens through at least late morning." said Shafer.

In other words, Thursday promises to be classic Mummers weather.

In any event, it's safe to say the city never has celebrated a championship in weather like this – not that it has had all that many to celebrate.

The Phillies' festivities were in the fall, and the Flyers and 76ers won their championships in spring.
