The Great Solar Eclipse of 2017

The view from space helps illustrate how the Earth, Sun and Moon align to make a solar eclipse possible.

On Monday, Aug. 21, a solar eclipse will be visible for much of the United States. In Philadelphia, a partial eclipse is expected. The three celestial bodies must be aligned just right in order for the eclipse to occur. That's why it's so rare.
