Heroes who are fighting breast cancer

Three doctors discovering new treatments - or helping patients understand their risk.

CRAIG JORDAN: Tamoxifen pioneer

Jordan, who grew up in England and trained there, was the first scientist to show that the breakthrough medicine tamoxifen could prevent breast cancer in lab rats. Queen Elizabeth II has honored him as an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire — just two ranks below knighthood.

In Philly, he's vice president and scientific director for medical science at Fox Chase Cancer Center.

DRS. MARY DALY and BARBARA WEBER: Risk watchers

The discovery of "susceptibility genes," such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, helps women with cancer in their families know the risks they actually face — and take appropriate action.

Weber, a Penn professor and researcher at GlaxoSmithKline in Collegeville, has been a world leader in breast cancer genetics. Daly, another world leader in genetic risks, works down the PA Turnpike at Fox Chase Cancer Center.
