Two dead in Route 202 crash in Chester County

The two-vehicle crash occurred on southbound Route 202 in East Whiteland Township on Sunday morning, stopping traffic, authorities said.

Two people died following a two-vehicle crash on southbound U.S. Route 202 in East Whiteland Township on Sunday morning, partially closing the heavily used highway in Chester County, authorities said.

The accident occurred shortly after 8 a.m. on Route 202 near Conestoga Road when a 2016 Kia Forte, being operated by a 62-year-old man, was traveling north in a southbound lane and struck a 2015 Mercedes Benz that was traveling south, the Pennsylvania State Police said.

The drivers of both vehicles were dead at the scene. Police said it was not known why the Kia driver, identified as Melvin Baskerville, of Sharon Hill, was driving in the wrong direction.

The driver of the other vehicle, which was struck head-on, was identified as Monique Pierre, 32, of Coatesville.

Route 202 in that area was shut down for about seven hours after the crash, which remained under investigation. Authorities ask that anyone with information call the State Police Embreeville station at 610-486-6280.
