Lower Merion issues advice for papal visit

Officials in Lower Merion are advising residents to prepare for the World Meeting of Families "as if it's a big snowstorm." "Gas up your car, get your milk and your bread ahead of time," said township spokesman Thomas J. Walsh.

"Gas up your car, get your milk and your bread ahead of time," said township spokesman Thomas J. Walsh.

Pope Francis is scheduled to stay at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Wynnewood, and meet with bishops there the morning of Sept. 27. It will be his only local stop outside of Philadelphia, and will not be open to the public.

A public briefing on the visit was given at Tuesday's Police Commission meeting, but Walsh noted that many plans, including street closures, won't be announced for several more weeks.

Still, officials say, residents should begin thinking about supplies, transportation, possible school or business closures, and heavy traffic in the last few days of the World Meeting of Families and the papal visit, Sept. 24 to 28.
