More than $55 million poured into the political action committees, the Sunlight Foundation reported over the weekend.
According to Sunlight’s Jacob Fenton, 11 individuals were responsible for over $27.6 million icontributions to the super Pacs, which are free to smited amounts independently of the campaigns.
Among the top donors to Republican-affiliated groups, which have outraised Democrat-affiliated groups by a ratio of 3 to 1, include:
Billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, pictured right, and his wife Miriam ($11 million); Bob Perry of Perry Homes ($4.1 million); private equity CEO John Childs ($2.5 million; 21-year-old Ron Paul backer John Ramsey ($1.11 million), and billionaire hedge fund manager Paul Singer ($1 million.) Corporations kicked in another $4 million to GOP groups.
Among the top Democratic donors were:
Former Qualcomm CEO Irwin Jacobs ($2 million); reclusive media mogul Fred Eyechaner ($1.95 million); billionaire hedge fund manager George Soros ($1 million); Israeli-American billionaire Haim Saban ($1 million), and actor Morgan Freeman ($1 million). Unions contributed $2.6 million to Democratic groups.
The lion’s share of June’s largess went to two superPACS, Restore Our Future, which collected $20.7 million to back Mitt Romney and Priorities USA which mustered $6.2 million to back Barack Obama.
Karl Rove’s American Crossroads, which had its best month ever, brought in $5.8 million to bankroll causes supported by the GOP strategist, reported Politico.
According to the Center for Responsive Politics, super Pacs this year have spent a total of $106.8 million to support specific presidential candidates.
