N.J. red-light camera foe wants to redirect funds

To take away the financial incentive for towns to install red-light cameras, a New Jersey state senator proposes sending the revenue to a state safety fund.

State Sen. Michael Doherty (R., Warren-Hunterdon) introduced a bill Thursday that would require fines paid by motorists caught by red-light cameras be deposited in the state's Highway Safety Fund.

Most of the revenue goes to the municipalities that install and operate the cameras.

Doherty, an opponent of red-light cameras, said the legislation would "test the claims of local officials who say their only interest is the supposed safety benefits that cameras provide."
