NRA gets 100,000 new members after Sandy Hook massacre

POSTED: Thursday, January 10, 2013, 10:32 AM
FILE - This March 27, 2006 file photo, shows a Bushmaster AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and ammunition on display at the Seattle Police headquarters in Seattle. The maker of the Bushmaster rapid-fire weapon used to kill schoolchildren in Connecticut on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, was put up for sale on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, as investors soured on the gun business. In the past 18 days, the National Rifle Association has gained more than 100,000 new members. An NRA spokesperson revealed the spike in paid members to POLITICO's Mike Allen as the organization readies for a discussion with Vice President Joe Biden. The NRA hopes to gain another 800,000 paid members before the end of this debate.

The NRA says that it's willing to listen to proposals and participate in discussion with lawmakers, but, ultimately, needs to represent the faction of Americans who don't want them to compromise on the issue of gun control.

“However, the NRA is hearing not just from Beltway elites and the chattering class, but real Americans all over the country that are hoping the NRA is not going to compromise on any of the principles of the Second Amendment, nor are we going to support banning guns. But we’re willing to listen.”

Membership to the National Rifle Association costs $25, but comes with a knife or a duffle bag. [POLITICO]

That's just great... Maybe some of them just wanted the knife or "duffle" (sp) bag.

King Obama trampling the Constitution with his Executive Orders, the beginning of the end of this once great country. Get one while you can, you're going to need it if you don't want to become a servant.

@dcn: The only modern-day president in the history of the U.S. who you could even come close to accusing of such nonsense would be George W. Bush. He was given a free pass to run the economy ragged and dragged the U.S. into an unneccessary conflict with Iraq. He also allowed the previous assault weapons ban to expire under his watch. Maybe if he had led some type of effort to extend the ban, the recent incidents which occurred in Aurora, Sandy Hook, and elsewhere, would not have happened.

Once again we have the Obama Adminstration trampling the rights of the law abiding. He and his adminstration want the government to be all and end all. We the law abiding did not commit these killings. It is the court system that destroyed a system of care for the mentally ill. I hope more people join so they can be heard. I upgraded to life member just because of the Obama admistrations stance on guns.

I don't recall the President or anyone esle making any statements relating to taking anyone's little guns away, however, I do not see the reason why anyone needs to have an AR-15 or AK-47 equivalent. And last I checked Wild Hillbilly, many of these mass shootings have been committed by the same "law-abiding citizens" who were able to legally purchase these weapons. You can hold the courts partially responsible for the degrading mental health system in this country, but also remember that many states have cut funds for mental health treatment, especially those run by the republicans. You can take your guns and run to your cave, because it's not about you or the rest of you paranoid freaks looking out for the zombie apocalypse. It's about the next group of victims that will be gunned down by some delusional "law-abiding citizen".

    um, no.
The Sandy Hook shootings were perpetrated by a mentally disturbed young man who killed a law abiding citizen (his mother) and stole her guns.

you need to "check" a little harder.

Same difference moron. Momma legally purchases weapons and stores them in a place where her mentally challenged son can access them.

We all need to stock up on Bushmaster AR-15 rifles, just in case we feel the need to murder dozens of people. Isn't America great! USA! USA! USA!

I want to see the gun nuts try to overthrow our "tyrannical" government. It would be amusing to watch them fight drones with guns. Lol. I suggest Alex Jones lead the way.

It worked in 1776. Why would it not today? 240 years ago, you would have been waving the Union Jack and toasting King George. Good show!

In the last year where records were tabulated (2011?) there were 270 justifiable gun deaths by civilians in America.

That same year there were 27,000 UNjustified gun deaths.

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

30 years ago America cracked down on alcohol and drunk driving and dramatically cut down on drunk driving deaths AND liver disease.

The time to crack down on guns is NOW.

To all you imbeciles who blame Obama for trampling gun owners rights, I did not vote for Obama, and I do not believe in banning guns, nor does Obama, I do believe in banning assault rifles. Get your facts straight. This is not a democratic / republican issue. The majority of Americans dem/rep feel they should be banned.

ComeAndTakeIt, thank you I have been called genius before. I know you haven't. The Federal Assault Weapons Ban was signed by Clinton 1994 and expired under Bush 2004. Know what you are arguing for. While you are at it read the 2nd amendment if you can. The only guns around 1791 fired one shot. So why would they draft an amendment preventing guns that have 100 bullets in a clip.

@comeandtakeit: It figures a sorry deadhead such as yourself would attempt to distort the issue of gun violence with statistics that are outside the main focus of this conversation. The level of GUN VIOLENCE...WHICH IS THE MAIN FOCUS OF THIS CONVERSATION...IS WHAT WE ARE CONCERNED WITH!!! You add to your point the conspiracy of gun control being a non-American agenda. What is more unpatriotic and non-American than allowing your fellow American the means and lethality to kill other Americans in such a horrible manner. Last I checked, there has been no mention by any U.S. Government official of sending in the U.S Military to go house to house and confiscate weapons from law-abiding American citizens. It's not about you and your guns, it's about preventing another nut job from killing a classroom full of kids, or mowing shoppers down at the local mall. And please, do not give me the standard NRA / gun nut line, "if there was at least one person armed with a gun when (insert mass shooting incident here)occured"! I've been waiting for that guy to show up for a long time, and guess what.....he is nowhere to be found!

OK Lets start with lalaw. It was not just GW Bush who let the assault weapon ban expire. It was congress too. Gues why? Because it was proven that the ban did nothing to stop or even slow down gun violence, it actually went up. As far as preventing Sandy Hook if the ban had been extended. While the gunman had a semi automatic rifle in his possession, it was the two hand guns that he used to kill the kids. Neither of which was ever on the ban list. So guess what? The ban would have done nothing to prevent Sandy Hook. Still blaming GW for everything haha. BTW how did the Iraq war become part of this subject? Typical, when you got nothing just lie and change the subject.

@puddlemutt: First off, the previous assault weapons ban also made the sale of semi-auto magazines with a capacity over ten rounds illegal, so most mass shooters would just have to work a little harder. Second, I mentioned the Iraq War to contrast the ineptitude of GWB, by dragging the U.S. into an needless bloody conflict and committing nonsensical political blunders such as allowing the assault weapons ba to sunset. Maybe he assumed tough guys like you would grab your guns and head to Baghdad to help out. I think not.

An ar-15 is not an assault weapon and was not included in the original ban anyway. As a legal gun owner and ccw carrier it is not the governemnts business what I own.

This makes the NRA's total membership? How many? About 4.4 million? It's a small group and many of its members support stricter controls over gun purchases. However, the organization gets a lot of money from gun manufacturers. Bushmaster Firearms gives money to the NRA. Remember how the tobacco companies secretly funded "smokers rights" groups?

I see everything is going according to my plan. Keep going at it because I am the only one that knows the "End Game". Gun control in America is dead and so is the multi-round clip issue. The Politicians are playing you. Wake Up! Buy Kevlar for the kids and yourself. It's a good investment. Suckers!
