President Obama on Thursday nominated a veteran Common Pleas Court judge to fill a vacancy on the federal bench in Philadelphia. John Milton Younge, 60, has overseen criminal and civil cases in the city's courts since 1996. He previously sought a seat on the Pennsylvania Superior Court as a Democrat in 2009.

Younge also worked as executive director and then general counsel to the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority from 1985 to 1995. He has earned law degrees from the University of Nevada-Reno and from Howard University.

The president nominated Younge along with three candidates for federal judicial posts in the western half of the state. If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, the nominees would fill all of the state's current U.S. District Court vacancies. - Jeremy Roebuck
