Hey 'comissioners,' what's wrong with this headline?

Shiny, meticulously lettered maroon signs encased in gray frames have sprouted in Montgomery County parks, along the county trail system, and in front of the courthouse.

The six-foot-tall signs, heralding the county website and bearing the names of the commissioners, began appearing several months ago - but it was not until an alert county employee, with perhaps a bright future as a copy editor, drew attention to an embarrassing error.

While the sign correctly spelled the names of Josh Shapiro, Val Arkoosh, and Bruce L. Castor Jr., it identified them as "comissioners," dropping an "m."

A $4,000 fix is on the way.

The 26 signs constituted an effort to replace out-of-date, mismatched signs around the county. The one at the courthouse went up about a month ago.

"You know, this administration has done a pretty good job, but we're not perfect," county spokesman Frank Custer said.

The county has ordered 52 new labels – one for the front and back of each sign.

The signs are labeled with adhesives, Custer said, so the panels themselves will not be discarded.

Within 10 days, he said, the county should be back on track with its new – and correctly spelled – signs.

But the county's spell-check work will be put to the test again in January. Castor is not running for reelection as a commissioner, so at least one of the names on the sign is destined to change.
